Nylon vs. Polyester

Nylon has superior strength and is remarkably resilient. What that means is that it will spring back into place after you step on it. Polyester has an excellent inherent stain resistance (hydrophobic). It just won't absorb any liquid. Nylon is more absorbent, but all carpet fibers are treated with some kind or type of stain resistance. So when treated, nylon is very resistant to stains. Both nylon and polyester have versions that are very soft to the touch. As for price, nylon can be pricier than polyester because polyester has a lower production cost.

How to compare

It is essential to remember that each fiber has a different quality level. So you want to make sure they are equivalent when comparing them. For example, say you have a high-quality polyester. It could have better durability than a low-quality nylon carpet.

There are also versions and sub-versions to keep in mind. For example, a solution-dyed version of nylon goes all the way through the manufacturing process instead of after it. When the fiber is solution-dyed, then there are no dye lots for a stain to attach to. Thus, the stain resistance is increased.
